Grandmother Hattie Scott Dies at 103 in Douglas County
The area's oldest resident Mrs. Hattie Scott died in her sleep Saturday at her Route 3 home. She was 103, celebrated March 30, and survived by two sons Frank and James, 12 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First R.M. Baptist Church. Burial Maple Grove Cemetery. Rumsey Funeral Home will host callers until noon Tuesday. She spent 100 years in the Douglas Leavenworth area and helped raise seven children plus six grandchildren.

Topekan Plunges From Kaw River Bridge In Apparent Accident
A 57 year old Topekan, Dwight Olander, was in poor condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a 60 foot drop from the Kaw River Bridge on the Turnpike north of Lawrence. The car struck the inner guard rail and skidded across the bridge before plunging into the Kaw River. Olander suffered a broken back left leg and multiple rib fractures along with cuts and bruises. Police and troopers described the fall as a freak accident and extricated Olander with bumper jacks after he was pinned in the front seat. He remained conscious during rescue and did not recall the sequence of events. The toll road reported this was the first such incident on the Turnpike.
