British forces renewed pressure along the Lys front and south of the Scarpe river, regaining lost ground near Arras and Vimy Ridge. Ellsworth Kansas April 20 Denial of a hearing for Joseph L Bristow former US senator and Republican Senate candidate in Ellsworth followed a decision by the local council of defense executive committee to cancel his speaking dates. He was picketed by Home Guards outside the newspaper office after county commissioners barred use of the court house. Capper refused comment pending further information. Local guards are a purely local group not yet in the state guard.
Nebraska and four other states join Kansas in hosting the first College Food Conservation Conference at the University of Kansas. Miss Sarah L. Arnold of Simmons College leads sessions in Fraser Chapel and the Chemistry building amid talks on food conservation and winning the war. Margaret Lynn coordinates KU program as Arnold travels to Washington to lead college efforts nationwide.
A Kiev dispatch via Berlin reports Russia proposed peace negotiations to Ukraine's ministerial council and the proposal was accepted. A courier has delivered the Ukrainian authorities formal acceptance to Moscow. Negotiations are planned for Kursk.

The Postmaster General Burleson is asked to approve a special report by the committee on public information detailing the amount of printed paper sent to American soldiers. The effort used 2,268 teens yards of tape and 120 yards of material. One thousand two hundred spools of thread will be used to hem the tape.
London April 20 British casualties reported during the week totalled 12 368 divided as killed or dangerously wounded 1459 wounded or missing 2175 and others 2175. The casualties for this week are about one and a half times larger than those reported the previous week.
Lawrence board plans a vocational agriculture department in the local high school following a state board modification of the Smith Hughes act. The district must recruit students from farm areas or provide 30 agricultural course enrollees to qualify, with instructors needing formal agricultural training and practical farm experience. The program would cover crops, animal husbandry, dairying, poultry, soils, farm management, rural economics, carpentry, and machinery handling.
The Reverend Mi bee Sere Veophstar of the First church in Lawrence travels to Hutchinson for the High District Convention of the Christian churches. He serves as president of the Eighth District Association and will chair convention sessions. The gathering begins Wednesday with an address by the Reverend Sores. Twenty nine churches are represented in the district association.

Mount Oreal Encampment No 4 of the Odd Fellows announced through trustee W S Everett that two 1 Third Liberty Loan bonds were purchased. The encampment also invested $100 in the Second Liberty Loan and plans another donation to the Lawrence branch of the Rew Crosk. Mr and Mrs F A Scott of Detroit are visiting Lawrence for the weekend on business.
