Rome reports Hungary pledges loyalty to the Rome Berlin axis as Teleky casts Yugoslavia as aligned. Axis diplomacy aims to pull Belgrade into the bloc, with Italian Yugoslav talks planned and Yugoslav officials seen as potentially yielding to Mussolini’s influence.
In Rome on April 19, Count Stephen Csaky, Hungary's foreign minister, said President Roosevelt's nonaggression proposal was an unwelcome surprise. He recalled Wilson's fourteen points and spoke during talks with Premier Mussolini and Italian ministers Ciano and Teleky.
A 30 year old armament worker Joseph Kelly faced charges in Chorley England for selling vital wartime secrets from a Roy ordnance factory to Germany with help of a Berlin envoy. He allegedly traveled to Blogne Germany to pass documents, one copy recovered, another missing, a bomb plan cited as potential enemy aid.
London reports Britain's Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax stating no policy of encirclement. He vows a solemn undertaking against such aims and notes Henderson will return to Berlin after reporting. Leavenworth Kan April 19 speculation places Lacey M Simpson Canton as a likely successor to Kirk Prather as warden of the State Penitentiary at Lansing. Simpson served 1933 to 1987 after appointment by former Governor Landon and was later replaced by Prather in 1937 during Governor Huxman term.
Roy W. Howard editor of the New York World Telegram says after returning from Europe that England now backs Chamberlain's Munich stance emphasizing a war would occur by England and France's choosing, not at Hitler's urging.

He used a five by seven inch plate with a density filter of 100 to 1, exposing every five minutes at one one hundredth of a second. The images show the sun shortly after eclipse start, tracing the shadow’s progress. Two close shots were taken one minute apart.

Twenty three indictments against alleged narcotics ring members were returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City. Angelo Donnici heads the syndicate with seven indictments, others include Angelo Nigro, Charles Crapisi, Jack Ancona, James Abbott and several named associates in conspiracy and narcotics charges. Convictions carry 30 to 95 years.
Rabbi Ferdinand Myron Isserman of St. Louis will deliver the bac calaureate sermon to Kansas State college graduates on May 28.
Secretary Wallace informs Senator Capper that DOJ attorneys believe Congress can fix prices for farm products citing a Supreme Court coal decision. Wallace opposes Capper’s proposed minimum price bills for wheat corn and livestock warning such limits would reduce marketable quantities and cause chaos.
Twenty six Kansas high school seniors qualified in district tests travel to Lawrence to take final examinations for Summerfield scholarships. Names include Mark Wiesselman Lawrence Chester Gates Baldwin George Johnson Oskaloosa and others from Pratt Topeka Meade Hutchinson and more. Examinations start at 8 30 tomorrow with 10 to 12 winners receiving four year university scholarships.
Knabe No.1 well near Gardner Kansas shows oil at 723 feet with potential daily output of 50 to 100 barrels, Bartlesville sand at 707 feet thick about 30 feet. Cameron expects to shoot the well Thursday or Friday. location on the Forest City basin flank, a mile west and two miles north of Gardner.

Richard Butler said Britain is as well informed as any government. The reference ties to Roosevelt’s February Florida conference remark amid Germany’s March absorption of Czecho-Slovakia.
