An 85 year old Lawrence landmark Trinity Episcopal Church at 10th and Vt Streets was struck by a morning fire that destroyed the roof and gutted the interior. Parish members estimate losses between 50 000 and 100 000 with furnishings mostly gone. The chapel and new addition suffered only window damage and waterish, while the steeple area escaped heavy damage. The church was insured for 160 000 with 8 000 furnishings. Firefighters faced high windows and a metal roof as they battled flames for hours, bringing the blaze under control with a 110 foot ladder.
