On April 17 1961 some 1500 CIA trained Cuban exiles launched the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba to overthrow Fidel Castro. In 1521 Martin Luther faced charges at Worms for his writings. Verrazano reached present day New York Harbor in 1524. Benjamin Franklin died in Philadelphia in 1790 at 84. Virginia seceded in 1861. Sirhan Sirhan convicted in Los Angeles in 1969 for Kennedy assassination. Apollo 13 returned safely in 1970 after oxygen tank rupture.

Katelyn Carney and Derek O'Dell marked the two year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings by running a 3.2 mile race. They helped bar the classroom door during the attack in which 32 people died. Families of the last two victims sued for an $11 million settlement.

New FC2 Female Condom Aims to Expand Use Worldwide
Health advocates promote a cheaper, easier to use version of the female condom to broaden its role in fighting AIDS and STDs. The FD2 FC2, approved last month by the FDA, is produced by the Chicago based Female Health Co. It is similar in look to the 1993 version but uses synthetic rubber to lower production costs.

North Dakota town evacuates as dam work fortifies Clausen Springs
A convoy of trucks excavators bulldozers and backhoes moved in to fortify the seeping Clausen Springs Dam near Kathryn in eastern North Dakota. National Guard troops and engineers worked to save the town of 55 residents six miles east as water threatened to flood the area if the earthen structure fails. Evacuations began Wednesday with the town largely deserted except for a few guardsmen surveyors and heavy equipment on Main Street.
