Kansas claims big share of Arkansas River water
Kansas has taken about 18 000 acre feet of Arkansas River water in the past two weeks reducing John Martin Reservoir storage by about half. Engineer Steve Witte says Kansas released its full water once weather allowed and will rely on natural river flow for the rest of summer unless storms permit more storage. The pool dropped from 38 500 acre feet on March 27 to 16 200 acre feet this week. An acre foot equals about 326 000 gallons and can serve one or two families for a year.
