Lawrence voters face a Tuesday referendum to raise local property taxes by an average of millage to fund higher teacher salaries by about 14.9 percent over two years and add 15 elementary support staff positions. The plan ties to a statewide salary comparison and enrollment growth.
Kansas Regents praise conference committee for funding 83 percent of the first year of the Margin of Excellence program. The deal would inject about 9.4 million in new money for raises and program upgrades across six state universities, with average salary increases around 7 percent systemwide.
Cyrus Mody, a Central Junior High School seventh grader, won the All Kansas Spelling Bee in Topeka West High School, spelling pickerel hirsute cholesterol and succotash to clinch the title.
