Ellis D Bever director of the state income tax department said it would take about 10 days to tally returns from recent remittances as clerks begin opening about 20 000 pieces of mail. Total tax tabulated stood at 533 000 and 3100 returns representing 83 000 in tax were recorded yesterday. A five percent penalty plus six percent interest applies to returns mailed after yesterday deadline. The department expects total income tax for the year around 800 000.
