New York April 16 A CPA machine gun crew aboard a United States merchantman fired at an attacking submarine and destroyed a periscope but the vessel sank off the Atlantic coast. Seven of the 88 survivors are missing and presumed dead. one man was killed by the first torpedo and six likely drowned as lifeboats were drawn under by the second torpedo. A survivor reported seeing the submarine’s surface while struggling on a lifeboat. Naval officials note submarines often carry multiple periscopes. The crew had seven minutes to respond before the ship went to the Caribbean seabed.
British headquarters report fierce all day fighting in the Minhla Minbu area as Japanese forces land fresh troops and drive toward a rapid knockout of Burma defenders. Douglas County will open a central rationing office on the first floor of the Lawrence National Bank building Go on. The county commissioners voted to consolidate three local boards Baldwin Eudora and Lecompton into one county board to handle outside Lawrence applications. The Lawrence city board remains. The move aligns with state rationing board guidance and will have Mrs Paul Lyons as full time clerk.
