Roy Williams Returns to North Carolina as Coach

Roy Williams leaves Kansas after 15 years to coach at North Carolina with a reported $260,000 annual base plus incentives that could push the package toward $2 million per year. At Kansas his base was about $130,000 with a total package over $1 million. He described the decision as painful amid a week featuring a national title game appearance and a fired athletic director. Williams cited roots and family, thanked Dean Smith, and announced a quick university search for a successor, with Illinois' Bill Self discussed as a leading candidate. He praised KU's tradition, reflected on his time in Lawrence, and said he felt the move was the right decision this time.
