On Monday the Senate refused admission to its chamber to a yellow cross breed named Doogout that serves as the seeing eye guide for a Senate aide. The event was noted as the Senate keeping the dog out of the chamber. See story on page 6A.
Suzanne Henley of Las Vegas won a world record Megabucks prize of 12.5 million dollars at the New York New York hotel casino after waiting more than an hour for a specific slot machine. She declined a $20 offer to yield the machine and said she had a strong feeling about it. She received the first of 20 annual checks at a conference.
Local accountants raced to midnight as the April 15 filing deadline approached. Michael Hickman of Hickman and McFadden described 12 hour shifts and a push to finalize up to 30 returns, with many opting for four month extensions. Dan Dick and Dean Radcliffe faced nonstop work while clients sought last minute guidance.
President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton filed 1994 taxes showing 1 065 101 in adjusted gross income with 199 791 in federal taxes. Royalties from It Takes a Village largely funded donations of 590 000 to charity while about 152 000 covered taxes.
James McDougal, once linked to the Clintons, received a lenient three year prison sentence after aiding Whitewater prosecutors. He publicly challenged Clinton’s testimony about an illegal $300,000 loan and said he lied to protect the president while stressing his cooperation uncovered new evidence corroborated by officials. Starr called McDougal’s cooperation revealing and broader in scope.
Atty General Janet Reno rejected Republican calls for an independent counsel to probe campaign fund raising. She said a task force of career Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents is handling the investigation and will continue, noting no credible evidence of felony by top officials. White House welcomed the decision while Republicans denounced it as inexcusable.
In Emeryville Ontario Debbie and Dwayne Tamai face a mysterious stalker dubbed Sammy. since December calls are repeatedly cut off messages misdirected and a distorted voice announces theft of voicemail. the intruder eavesdrops switches TV channels and even shuts off electricity baffling investigators and electronics experts. both the family and police have no clue about the suspect or motive.
