An unidentified man, later named Chester A. Sears of Decatur Illinois, 49, was blown apart by a dynamite blast beside a highway 11 miles north of El Dorado Kansas. The incident is described as an apparent self-inflicted death, with investigators noting the worker touched off sticks of dynamite using a car battery. The victim, a dynamiter employed on an REA highline project for Southwest Contractors Inc. of Braman Oklahoma, lay mostly beside his car.
