Thomas C. Smith 87 of Hutchinson died Sunday night at Grace Hospital. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hutchinson First Presbyterian Church with burial at Fairlawn Cemetery. He was father of Verner Smith of Kansas University and had served as clerk of the Board of Education and superintendent of buildings and grounds before retiring in 1951. Surviving are his widow Amy, son Verner of Lawrence, daughter Mrs Philip D. Fears of Hutchinson, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

KU approves broader courses for arts college freshmen
Kansas University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty approves major changes to the bachelor of arts requirements to give freshmen more elective options. The plan, effective for fall freshman entrants except those in Engineering, Fine Arts and physical education, adds more free electives and a five to six hour laboratory science requirement, plus math through algebra and a foreign language. A 15 hour minor is added within the 20 to 40 hour major structure, with language credit possible via high school work or college courses.
