Advocates Reach Out to Lawrence Mentally Ill Neighbors
In Lawrence, advocates describe how homeless individuals with mental illness face stigma and isolation. A regular at a West Sixth Street convenience store reads newspapers for hours, prompting outreach by Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and other agencies. Gary Miller coordinates homeless outreach across Douglas County to connect people with services, while Salvation Army case workers funnel shelter residents to Bert Nash. Law enforcement notes that involuntary commitment only applies when danger exists, otherwise voluntary help remains the option.
