The Atlantic Fleet was ordered to Tampico as Washington faced cabinet tensions over the marines incident. President Wilson, Secretary Daniels, and top officials debated actions and possible apologies while U S forces near Veracruz awaited further orders. In Concord on April 11 the Supreme Court considered Harry Thaw’s petition for a writ of habeas corpus. The court ruled that no action would be taken until arrangements with the prison are completed and the case is taken to the United States Supreme Court of Appeals. The guardianship and Thaw’s condition remain unchanged for the moment, but his petition for a writ of habeas corpus may be decided by the nation’s highest court.
Plans for the state Luther League meeting to be held here May 12 are under way by local organizers. The event will feature sessions on religious problems of the young and will include speakers Rev. RL ES Lance of Kansas, Dr. AWds Yarger, Dr. Andres Han, and Rev. Geo S. Murphy among others.
Fillmore, an early Lawrence resident, died this morning after a long illness. She lived in New York City for many years before returning to Lawrence with her brother Symiel Poole. Survived by Eben Poole and Mrs. Kate Anderson. husband TS Fishuore. services will be at ten o’clock tomorrow at the First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. O. CG. Brown. Also cited: Kansas City reporting on AFL Railway Workers’ Department progress and a note on Illinois Central Harriman Lines shopmen strike.
Opening day in the American League featured the New York Americans versus Philadelphia at the Polo Grounds and the National League began at Ebbetts Field with Brooklyn facing Boston. New league president Wiener tossed the first ball amid clear weather and festive parades in several cities. In Kansas City the American Association opener included a downtown parade with Mayor Jost pitching the first ball, as Louisville Milwaukee and Indianapolis held similar celebrations.
Resplendent on Mount Oread, students resumed classes after a four day break. Brilliantly colored dresses and millinery sparkled in sunlight as spring styles appeared. Seven lives were lost when a five story brick Melvin department house burned in Boston on April 14. Five people perished in the flames and two women are believed to have died by jumping from the fourth and fifth floors. The remaining victims, all fatally burned, were found on higher floors as the fire raged.

Chicago April 14 Jack Johnson was granted a new trial on Mann Act charges. The federal appeals court reversed part of a lower court verdict and ordered re sentencing on one count relating to transport of Bell Schreiber from Pittsburgh to Chicago. The court found no trafficking in vice and ordered retrial on the commercial clauses count.
Two Haskell Indian School youths William Hoontewa and Solur Pateke escaped Saturday night, stole bicycles, and rode to Kansas City then toward Tulsa Oklahoma. They were jailed in Douglas County awaiting charges of theft and possible reformatory sentencing.
Playgrounds Association of Lawrence re elects Dr A R Kennedy as president and H W Boltz as vice president with new officers. Prof McKeever outlines a plan to expand playgrounds as part of public youth development, stressing voluntary support, disciplinary authority, and community participation to boost the movement’s impact in the city.
