At Mitchell Field New York crowds press for news as the Bremen’s fuel from Baldonnel runs low after forty hours aloft from Ireland. Reports of progress were scarce with rumors fueling optimism and then pessimism as observers weighed fuel, distance, and favorable winds along the Maine to Nova Scotia route.
The German steamer Derfflinger, which stopped at Galway for two hours, reported yesterday it had picked up a message from a distant steamer indicating a Junkers Bremen plane was sighted at sea. The other vessel’s name and details were not disclosed, and the Derfflinger did not sight the Trans Atlantic plane.
An unidentified German plane was sighted flying very high over Kingsport at 10 30 am Atlantic standard time. Captain Barkhouse of the Canadian government steamer Atlas confirmed the sighting stating markings could not be distinguished but he believed it to be a German Bremen. Several witnesses heard and saw the aircraft as authorities sought to determine if it crossed farther west along the Fundy coast. Continued: on Page.
Washington April 13 AP The administration and chamber of commerce of the United States clashed before a Senate Finance Committee over tax reduction. The chamber pressed for a 406 million dollar cut, double the treasury proposal. Secretary Mills warned that such a plan would create a treasury deficit, demand a complete policy change, and delay debt retirement.
Winners in the finals of the annual law and... high school forensic contest were announced in the school auditorium. Oratory winner Glenn Mitchell with extemporaneous speaker John Williams, and dramatics tied for first Ethlene Compton and Lida Holmes. Contestants performed on topics including Death to Mars The New South and Mayor William Thompson and Politics. Cash prizes from the Ferking trust fund supported the event organized by Miss Nell Miller with judges Miss Dorothy Moody Miss Sara Laird and Prof. Robert Calderwood.
Cincinnati Reds drop the opener in Chicago with a 2 0 defeat as Cubs pitchers hold them to six hits while Chicago tallies runs in the later innings. Batteries: Nehf and Gonzales for Chicago. Adalph Boehler of Junction City was found guilty by a jury in the U S district court in Slopeka of receiving stolen government property. Judge George T. McDermott deferred sentence until tomorrow.
Kansas weather forecast reports tonight with rain in western portions and snow possible, cooler tonight near freezing in west and north. Saturday largely partly cloudy and colder in the southeast, with regional road conditions varying. The Ku Klux Klan suit seeking an injunction against five former members was dismissed by Judge Thomson who ruled the organization vile and destructive and that Evans, imperial wizard, ordered a Carnegie parade riot. The decision cited gross law violations by the Klan and denied the plaintiffs relief at their cost.
Plans for the eighth annual KU Karnival grow as fraternities and sororities stage special programs short plays and stunts. Governor Smith of New York arrived in Asheville North Carolina for a southern vacation his first in the region. He detrained at Biltmore stations and was welcomed by several thousand persons before proceeding to the Biltmore Forest country club which will be his headquarters here. Start liquor ring probe.
Topeka April 13 AP reports a federal grand jury began an investigation into alleged signing irregularities connected to Wichita. The probe aims to determine whether improper conduct occurred in the signing process and identify any parties responsible.
Lawrence director Charles C Fetty said the full cast for the comedy A Day in Hollywood will be announced tomorrow. He noted five reading parts remain to be filled by Lawrence residents and KU students. Filming starts Monday at 1 30 pm with a staged automobile wreck at Seventh and Massachusetts. The project aims for completion next week for a showing at Bowersock theatre.
The University commencement committee met in the alumni office yesterday and finalized plans for the forthcoming events. A fire early today destroyed the Kay Valley and Western Railway freight depot in Bonner Springs. Only two small freight items and an automobile were in the building. The blaze started shortly before 3:30 AM. efforts to extinguish it were hampered by the fast spread of flames across the interurban depot area opposite the Union Pacific line. Miss Helen Stockwell violinist and Lawrence High student heads to Chicago to join National High School Orchestra members for a week of rehearsals and a Wednesday night concert directed by Frederick Stock. The group includes 270 players from nearly every state and may be broadcast on NBC.
Mrs Isabell C Allen of Kansas City asks Congress to grant 200000 to Americans harmed by government poisoned industrial alcohol her son Wellington J Allen died after allegedly drinking poisoned beverage. The petition, first of its kind, was referred to the Senate claims committee by Vice President Dawes.

He warned Italy under Mussolini risks liberty for 42 million people while Russia’s one million communists rule with dogmatic aims. He contrasted China’s Nationalists, noted labor misery, and urged constructive revolution over destruction. He praised US friendship with China and called India spiritually vital.
Principal John R. Barnes announced vaccinations for smallpox at Lawrence High School expected to finish by end of day. About fifty students planned to be vaccinated or receive a prior checkup, with thirty five vaccinated by city health officers in the city hall health rooms this morning. The health room will reopen tomorrow 10 to 12 to continue vaccinations, every morning except Sunday until further notice. Letters are being drafted at the office. Hugh Snyder was retained for another year as tester for the Douglas County Cow Testing Association starting May 2 at a board meeting in the Chamber of Commerce Building. Interest in the association has greatly increased with Snyder’s leadership, membership now at capacity and a waiting list forming.
George Roscoe and Wayne Bartiott were named yesterday by the student memorial committee to study how to form a managerial board for the Union building. The board would include eight students, three faculty, three alumni, and one regent, and is expected to be appointed soon. Provisions were established late last year.
Wentworth Military academy teams from Lexington Missouri halted in Lawrence this noon en route to Baldwin to face Baker University. Seventeen track athletes two tennis players and two golfers traveled by bus with coaches.
County engineer reports paving on Highway T3W south of Lawrence will resume next week if weather permits. Two segments of the 9.9 mile contract are partially completed with substantial progress last fall and more work planned this year. Traffic will be detoured one mile east during operations. one half mile at the south end and eight tenths of a mile across the Wakarusa river bottom await completion when fills are stable. The remaining 2 miles south to Franklin county contract expected to start by April 28, with Douglas county paved both ways on federal highways.

Gene Shank of St Paul piloted a 9 horsepower bi plane in a wind swept test at St Paul. He stayed aloft for 14 hours and 14 minutes to set a new sustained flight record, surpassing Harry Brooks who flew 38 minutes in a Ford plane from Detroit to Titusville.
