African Extravaganza showcases KU African culture on campus

The sixth annual African Extravaganza at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries center featured dancing music fashion poetry and food from Bahamas Mauritius and Africa regions. KU students shared culture via a regional parade performances and a fashion show. A co-sponsored lecture Modernization and Change in Africa will follow with free admission.

Summer Activities Fair to help Lawrence youth plan

The Journal-World hosts its first Summer Activities Fair for ages 3 to 18 at Lawrence High School cafeteria on May 1 from 10 am to 3 pm. Exhibitors include the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and safety officials from the police, fire, and Douglas County Sheriff offices. Students can sign up for programs, learn about classes, and enter door prize drawings for movie tickets and swimming passes.

March planned to honor Sevier shooting anniversary

Native American activists organize a 4 p.m. march on April 21 in Lawrence to support Gregory Sevier’s family two years after his death in the 1991 police shooting. Ruth Kyle and Lori Learned said the event will include speeches and a tepee at Haskell Indian Junior College.

KU law professor dating student faces dismissal hearing

Amy McGowan, KU law graduate, testified she dated professor Emil Tonkovich from 1982 to 1986 in an open relationship. Prosecutors say Tonkovich abused his position by coercing students, while Tonkovich defends his conduct as fair. The February 1992 hearing featured tense exchanges as evidence includes alleged punitive grading and multiple student relationships.

Missing document turns up in Tonkovich case at KU

Kansas University law professor Emil Tonkovich faces new scrutiny as Kim Dayton recants and reveals she gave a 1991 law student statement charging Tonkovich with harassment to her personal lawyer. Dayton claims three additional student statements exist while the faculty committee weighs material relevance and credibility.

KU hearing ends without ruling on Tonkovich complaint

The committee recessed after a tense session where Marino and Tonkovich sparred over witness questioning and derogatory terms. Tonkovich sought removal of an allegation about changing a course grade for a female student, but Budig and subordinates differed, and no decision was reached.

Great Plains scholars lecture at Kansas University

Rutgers researchers Frank J. Popper and Deborah Epstein Popper visit KU for a free public lecture on Great Plains undeveloped land and buffalo habitat in Woodruff Auditorium. They will also meet KU classes, speak at Emporia State University and Haskell Indian Junior College during a weeklong Midwest tour.
