President Truman fired Gen MacArthur from Tokyo amid a worldwide uproar. Republicans debated impeachment while U N officials and Britain voiced mixed relief and concern. MacArthur sought broader war aims, conflicting with policy to limit fighting to Korea.

Washington April 11 The White House denounced Senator Tobey for recording phone conversations with President Truman amid an RF C loans probe Tobey claimed the President said many congressmen took fees but officials said he had no evidence Tetley testified he recorded two talks with Truman about RF C matters and revealed his confidential testimony to the Senate committee.
Washington April 11 The House defeated a proposal to defer college students from military service based solely on aptitude test scores. An amendment by Rep Kilday Texas limited the tests to furnish local draft boards with extra information while retaining boards final authority. The debate also touched on universal military training and the draft extension bill. Pratt Kansas April 11 Pratt elects Flanders mayor as civil defense director resigns from office.
Tokyo April 11 Ridgway takes over UN forces in Korea after Truman fires MacArthur. Front reports show Allied gains as Chorwon base wiped out and attacks along Hwachon dam front continue. Ridgway, 56, seen with Pace, makes no comment on Tokyo move.
Washington reports eighteen additional Chinese communist divisions identified in Korea, bringing total enemy strength to 695,000. The army notes 97,000 more Chinese troops since last Friday, with the new divisions totaling about 180,000 men. Overall forces include 212,000 North Koreans and 14,000 guerrillas.
The Stone of Scone, stolen from Westminster Abbey on Christmas, is delivered to Arbroath Abbey in Scotland. Nationalists say the stone should stay in Scotland and use both a king and a nation as symbols, with two suspects involved in the theft seeking greater Scottish autonomy.
Senator Carlson and Senator SchoeppeI of Kansas condemn the decision as a dire blow to the United States and its military, denouncing appeasement of Russia and allies. They warn Formosa and Hong Kong will be bargaining chips and call for a showdown to define U.S. Far Eastern policy.
Mrs Irene Heim files for divorce from Joseph Heim in Leavenworth on April 12. She asks the court grant of their home farm and television set as part of the settlement. Court attaches say the TV request is the first of its kind in the case.
Washington reports Britain proposes that Formosa be ceded to Communist China and included in the Japanese peace talks. Ambassador Dulles is expected to reject the ideas, which would require U S recognition of Chiang Kai-shek’s regime to be dropped. Washington notes the U S favors keeping Formosa under noncommittal status and maintains ties with Chiang.
In Topeka on April 11 a persistent cold April pattern brought freezes forecast statewide. Minimums may dip to 22-25 F west and 28-42 F east with lingering snow flurries in central areas. Rain or snow chances rise in northeast regions tonight, slight improvement expected tomorrow as western and southern areas clear.
Two Bergstrom based jet fighters collided over central Texas in the Temple Taylor area. Capt Robert Reese of Lawrence Kansas bailed out safely while Lt Charles E Brown of Birmingham Alabama belly landed at Bergstrom. Both planes were on routine training flights. Reese had been at KU for a year and a half for work and had recently married in Lawrence. The Missouri Pacific Railroad received permission to discontinue the Coffeyville Arkansas City branch line passenger service May 11.
London officials stated Britain would honor Cairo and Yalta commitments by returning Formosa to the Chinese government, while avoiding a fixed pledge to Chiang Kai-shek’s regime. The Foreign Office sought to balance recognizing Mao Zedong’s government with not appearing to rush Formosa’s transfer amid competing claims.
The annual law school day and the third annual law institute bring many Kansas lawyers to the University of Kansas campus. Thursday features a senior class banquet with Judge Alfred P. CPR ex Winter resigns as assistant basketball coach at Kansas State college to accept the head coaching job at Marquette University in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Winter, 29, replaces Bill Chandler who left Marquette after more than 20 years. He played for USC in 1947 and served in the navy before college. Winter is married with a young son.
Washington April 11 Local draft boards begin distributing application blanks for draft deferment tests tomorrow but supply shortages threaten delays. Tests are scheduled at 1200 centers on May 26 June 16 and June 30. Local office reports only 50 cards received and warns of possible postponement until more cards arrive.
Defense identifies additional casualties in Korea in casualty list No 274. The report lists 4 killed in action 48 wounded 12 missing in action and 3 injured in accidents.
