U S Ninth Army reached the Elbe at Magdeburg sixty four miles from Berlin after taking Essen and pressing toward Brunswick. Second armored division led by Lt Gen Simpson fought at Wolfenhuttel and reached toward Wufferstedt and Slenstdt while the First Army drove east across the Thuringian plain toward the Russian lines. CARL L BECKER DIES AT ITHACA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR
Carl Louis Becker a longtime history professor at the University of Kansas died last night in Ithaca Kansas after a long career at Kansas Cornell and Minnesota born 1873 in Blackhawk County Iowa he wrote more than 15 books on democracy and history and taught at Kansas Minnesota and Cornell before retiring from Cornell and focusing on writing He is survived by his son Frederick and two grandchildren.
