Merchant ships sunk near Brunswick with 54 survivors

Two medium merchant ships were sunk by a submarine off the Atlantic coast near Brunswick, Georgia. Fifty four men reached port after fighting their way from wreckage, while twenty were missing and feared lost and one died en route to shore in a lifeboat. Haskell chief to take new federal post in Indian Service

Warren Spaulding, superintendent at Haskell Institute, will depart soon for a wide ranging assignment in the Education division of the Indian Service, Interior Department. He will oversee defense training in Indian schools and visit schools across the Dakotas, Nebraska, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and other western states. Solon G. Ayers will act as superintendent in his absence. Spaulding returned from Washington after two weeks of conferences on defense training and later discussed education for Japanese removals. Indian youths are already entering war industries. hundreds have been trained and placed, with many Indians enlisting in the armed forces. The Spaulding family will keep residence at Haskell, with Mrs. Spaulding accompanying him on some trips.
