A wartime dispatch reports that artillery and chemical shells were dropped on American troops during a three day period. The account notes the rain of munitions caused casualties and prompted defensive measures.
In France units report a German assault of about eight hundred men repulsed completely by American artillery and infantry. They claim no American prisoners and note heavy German casualties after a three day bombardment and gas shell use.
For protection of Atlantic trade routes to Southern Europe the United States with Portugal's consent has established a naval base on the Azores. Guns have been landed to begin fortification of the station which will host American submarines destroyers and other small craft. It will also serve as a homing station for American airplanes assembled there.
Theodore Gardner a Lawrence resident and Civil War veteran with fifty years’ membership will speak to University Club members at the University Club House Friday night on The Old Army and the New. He enlisted young in a Kansas battery and will recount army incidents and conditions of his era and compare them with today.
William Nadelhoffer, aged about 79, longtime Lawrence resident and Civil War veteran, died at his home 1026 Connecticut Street from heart trouble. Born in Chicago in 1845, he enlisted in the 7th Illinois Cavalry at 16 and served through the war. He moved to Lawrence in 1869 and married Mary A Moser in 1869. Survived by his widow, three brothers, and three grandsons. Daughters include Mrs. Wil Johns of Lawrence, Mrs. Andrew Christensen, and Mrs. Minnie Hughes of Colorado Springs. He was a prominent figure in Grand Army of the Republic circles and a regular singer for local veterans posts, with evident participation in Liberty Day events.

Charles Stewart known as Buck, former engineering student at the University of Kansas, was killed in an air raid in France Wednesday. A telegram from Neodisha confirms his death. he is the fourth KU man to die in France since the U S entered the war. Stewart enlisted last spring, trained at Fort Riley, then served with the Royal Flying Corps in Taranto and Canada. He was a standout hurdler at KU and a Pi Kappa Alpha member.
Subscriptions reported by eight of twelve federal reserve districts show $205,280,000 in the first three days of the campaign. New York district leads with $157,200,000, while Boston and Cleveland also post strong totals. Dallas Minneapolis Richmond and Philadelphia not reporting. District figures include Boston 20,493,000 New York 157,200,000 Cleveland 6,650,000 Atlanta 1,411,400 Chicago 29,135,000 St Louis 394,100 Kansas City 1,241,450 San Francisco 1,123,650.

Surgeon General Banks links the Haskell outbreak to cold weather and dust, noting 157 cases across the school and similar epidemics at camps nationwide. He says authorities bore no blame and predicts the epidemic will end with warmer weather and rains.

The county clerk lists twenty nine men for the second draft with twenty seven whites and two colored men named for possible callups. Exemptions possible for physical disability and furloughs may shift the order. Names include Winthrop Haynes Robert Williams Donald Flags Millard Henderson and more. The two colored men to be called are Chuenee Kiger and Vivid Humes Neison.
A Lawrence club members pledged support to war activities with Supt Re A Kent and others leading talks. The group emphasized unity and broader effort beyond buying bonds, noting visits to New York Bust terminals showing large cargo capacity and shipping readiness.
An earthquake near the eastern end of Cuba was recorded on a university seismograph. The primary wave arrived 48 seconds after 9:15, with the main wave starting at 9:25 and lasting to 1:00. The quake was about 1430 miles southeast of the location, with distinct but faint shaking noted by university authorities.
About twenty seven Masons from Linwood went to Lanwegd to honor John Tudhope, the state’s oldest Mason, at his 85th birthday. The Laserence team presented a suitable chair as a gift. The gathering included forty guests and family members.

A marriage license was issued from the Probate court this morning to A. C. Stonestreet and Hazel Hall, both of Lawrence.
Washington April 11 Today's casualty list from General Pershing shows 124 names. One man killed in action, two died of wounds, five died of accident and thirteen at disease. Sixty nine severely wounded, four reported missing, thirty slightly wounded with officers named in the list.
Tom Harley's Fearless Minutemen arrange automobile transport for two speakers to visit multiple county districts. At Rock Creek to Spunkey Point AL J Doug and Horner Ulbot lead tours. central districts visit by George Krecek and O M Mitchell. Mrs George Krecek provides vehicles. others assign drivers and chaperones for the related meetings.
British forces evacuated Armentieres while German troops pushed toward Messines Ridge amid heavy hand to hand fighting. Frontline operations extended 25 miles from La Bassée to the Ypres canal with ongoing attacks north of Armentieres and in Estaires, Croix du Bas, Steenwerck, and surrounding areas as assault and counterattack continued.
At a Lawrence luncheon, junior high science class under Martha Trinder demonstrated a balanced meal using potatoes as a flour substitute. The meal, prepared and served by the girls, was praised as the best in some time by most attendees.
