Riverside Sewer District May Lose Three Tracts From Tax Rolls
The Kansas Supreme Court reversed a Douglas County decision, ruling that an $84.52 per acre assessment for Riverside Sewer District No. 8 main trunk sewer was unreasonable and discriminatory. The suit, brought Aug. 14, 1959 by Lea Roy Hurley, Margaret Hurley, Jeff Barnes, Stella Simmons and A B Glathart, seeks removal of 159.5 acres across three tracts from the district’s tax rolls, leaving the district with 48 tracts over 1,100 acres. construction cost $94,295.80 has been paid and the district may stay on its current basis minus the plaintiffs.

Mrs. Elma R. Stauffer 63 longtime director of nursing at KU Watkins Hospital died in a one car crash on U S 81 south of Salina after returning from Las Vegas. Her daughter was driver and not injured. Funeral Wednesday in Salina with KU Endowment memorial planned.

Ship and Vessel Collide Off New Jersey Coast
A fog bound collision occurred off the New Jersey coast between a 9 684 ton freighter the South African Pioneer and a small fishing boat named Powhatan. The Powhatan sank with one dead and three missing while a fifth crewman was rescued from a life raft. No one aboard the freighter was hurt. The South African Pioneer was en route to New York from Charleston.

Rest Home Lease to Olen Wharton in Douglas County
Douglas County planners approve a one year lease with a two year option for the new Con valescent Hospital south of Lawrence on U S 59. Olen Wharton will pay $750 monthly to the welfare fund while the county pays about $120 per patient, with federal support differing between county and private operation. Wharton will oversee staffing and operations, the state will license the home, and an open house is slated for April 30 ahead of a May 1 operation start.

About 100 people attended a dedication near the Kansas Turnpike east of Lawrence for a marker titled Lawrence and the Old Trails. With 225 to 250 boys in attendance, leaders planned a May dedication but weather halted activities and stalled the event. Girl Scouts provided hot meals and aid as planners press to reschedule the camp’s dedication.
