Preservation of the Old Military Trail in Manhattan
Don Combs, a 73 year old retired businessman, has spent about a decade preserving the Old Military Trail through Manhattan. He moved 4 to 5 ton rock markers, raised funds for bronze plaques, built a wooden bridge, and marked the route with yellow flags. The effort, begun in 1997, includes help from volunteers and the city, with goals to place ten markers along the Riley County segment and educate the public about the trail used by wagons and cavalry in the 1800s.
