Wet weather slows Lawrence gas pipeline replacement project

Heavy rains halted a long running Lawrence gas line upgrade as Iowa Pipeline crews paused work on 95 miles of bare steel mains and 9100 service lines. The program, in year five of an 11 year plan, will resume once ground dries with summer work along Harper and 21st streets and expanded moves planned for 1994 and 1995.

KU faculty split on computer science merger plan

Kansas University governance group urged keeping computer science separate from the engineering school while allowing options such as moving the department to physics or liberal arts. The administration urged a merger of computer science with electrical and computer engineering. faculty warned further hearings would hurt a program already strained by interdepartmental issues.

Campaign signs must be removed by April 20 7 p.m.

City chief building inspector Gene Shaughnessy notes election signs for city commission and school board must be taken down within two weeks of the election. He reports roughly two dozen signs collected so far and expects campaigns or property owners to finish cleanup in a few days. Also, U.S. Rep. Jan Meyers schedules a town meeting April 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library to hear Douglas County residents' concerns.

Sprint executive to speak at Baker University

Sprint's new president and chief operating officer John Frazee Jr. will address area business leaders and educators at the Kansas Independent College Fund annual meeting on April 22 at Baker University. Frazee, chair of the Foundation for Independent Higher Education, joined Sprint after its merger with Centel in March. KICF supports Kansas private colleges, and in 1991-92 raised over $500,000 for 17 member schools including Baker, serving about 15,000 students.

Artists donate top works to Lawrence Arts Center auction
