Prairie comeback at Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge near Des Moines
Iowa land restored as prairie highlights a reconstruction effort at the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge about 25 miles east of Des Moines. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spent 13 million dollars to purchase and seed 2,000 of 5,000 acres as grassland with funds to add 3,600 more. Elk and bison have been reintroduced and native grasses like big blue stem and Indian grass now populate tall bottom lands, offering a glimpse of midland prairie once spanning the region.
