Mike Browning 68 of Lawrence died April 5 2014. Born January 31 1946 in Pittsburg KS he taught at De Soto and Lawrence High School and held multiple administration roles. Survived by wife Linda two daughters six grandchildren and siblings with a life celebration April 26 2014 in Lawrence. Mary Lou Pierce 60 of Lawrence died Saturday April 5 2014 after a cancer fight. Born October 16 1953 to Frank and Lazara Romero she married Kerry Pierce in 1971 and raised Kevin and Amanda. She owned Pierce Day Care since 1988. Memorials to Mary Lou Pierce Memorial Fund. Private service at Rumsey Yost Funeral Home.
Lawrence police say Gallan walked out of a robbery nonchalantly after paying a taxi driver to Omaha. He was located at a bus station and arrested by Omaha officers. He faces local charges while federal parole warrants keep him in custody. Authorities tie him to a Trusty Credit Union robbery and a Kansas City bank heist the same week. Gaitan had prior burglary and narcotics convictions with parole through 2008.
Elmer, a Kansas resident, returns to his 50 acre farm near Oskaloosa after years away. His Washington childhood home, in the avalanche path north of Seattle, was destroyed with a friend, Mark Lambert, surviving after being crushed and sliding on collapsing debris. Lambert credits riding a collapsing wall to safety.
Elmer, whose home collapsed in a landslide, reflects on difficult losses. His neighbor survived but his wife died. He and his wife Jennifer worry over mounting debt and unanswered questions. He cherishes memories from the mountain and his brother Mike, who died last December. He plans no immediate return to the site.
