Kansas voters approve a constitutional amendment lowering the voting age to 18 for state and local elections and align residency rules with Supreme Court rulings. Turnout exceeds expectations as the measure passes with strong margins across counties amid broad party support.
About 8 a.m. today an alarm at Lawrence Memorial Hospital prompted a response from the fire department. Officials said an oversensitive smoke detector in the new wing and a later finding of broken glass over a fire alarm in the old section created a realistic drill atmosphere.
Gov Rob ert Docking announced the Kansas Air National Guard will receive another twin engine Phantom jet. The new plane will join the 190th Air Group based in Topeka.
The Kansas Legislature quickly ratified the national amendment extending the vote to 18 to 21 year olds after statewide approval. The House approved 120 to 0 and the Senate 34 to 3, with Gov. Docking urging ratification. The only dissent was from Sen. Arvin who argued it infringed states rights.

A grass fire at 11 30 a m Tuesday drew Lawrence Fire Department to a vacant lot behind Warehouse Furniture at 1547 E 23rd St. No damage occurred and the blaze was extinguished in under 30 minutes. One pumper responded to the scene per fire department reports.
President Nixon urged Congress to grant full citizenship and self government to Washington D C residents, create a development bank, expand federal funding for crime reduction and education, and build rapid transit while making the Potomac a celebrated river. He called for a voting representative in Congress and a new American Revolution beginning in the capital in 1972.
Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau will visit the Soviet Union for 10 days starting May 17 a spokesman said. The trip was postponed last fall due to the terrorist crisis in Quebec and will proceed now.
