Baby glass eels spur poaching clamp along Atlantic coast
Maryland officers led by Cpl. Rodger Bennett patrol tidal creeks near Ocean City to curb an illegal glass eel trade booming from Maine to Florida. The rise in prices, aided by a strong Asian market, has fueled nighttime poaching, net-setting, and heavy fines for offenders. Bennett helped seize a Delaware gang and a 1976 Chevrolet truck with nets and gear, as authorities report several arrests this spring in Maryland and Virginia.
