Phelps target in criminal defamation complaint filed in Topeka

In Topeka an opposing city council candidate filed a criminal defamation complaint with police against Rev. Fred W. Phelps Sr. The filing followed flier distribution in the council district claiming Ptacek is homosexual and pledged to promote the homosexual agenda. Ptacek acknowledged he is gay.

Defendant denies mistreating boys in DeMolay case

A Topeka man, 24, on trial in Douglas County faces three counts of sexual mistreatment with teenage Lawrence boys he recruited for DeMolay. His testimony said the youths lied about his involvement. he admitted awareness of acts but claimed no crime. Earlier witnesses described coercive pressure and control. He previously received a Shawnee County sentence of 70 years to life for related aggravated sodomy and child-liberties counts.

Trial ordered in murder case in Jefferson County

The second suspect in a Jefferson County murder, Franklin Eugene Sutton of Topeka, was ordered bound over for trial after a Monday preliminary hearing. Sutton and Bradley Wade Johnson, also of Topeka, face first degree murder and related charges in the death of Ben Creek, found March 5 southeast of Grantville. Arraignment set for 9 a.m. Wednesday. Creek died from knife wounds to the throat and inner thighs with head bruising. Sutton previously aided and abetted a 1979 murder in Topeka and was released from prison in 1990.
