Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 7 p.m. Absentee ballots are due by 7 p.m. Tuesday at the county clerk's office in the Douglas County Courthouse at 11th and Massachusetts. Only registered Democrats Republicans or unaffiliated voters may vote unaffiliated voters must declare a party at the poll.
Kansas Secretary of State Bill Graves predicted about 400000 Kansans would vote in the presidential primary Tuesday, with 175000 Republicans 150000 Democrats and 75000 independents. Local issues attract some voters. several counties hold advisory secession questions, sales tax referenda, and a school board recall in Sedgwick. Government officials note turnout around 35 percent in Douglas County, and Perot interest among potential voters as an independent option.
Kansas University officials announced the resignation of computer science chair William Bulgren after years of discord in the department. Bulgren, chair since 1985, said his departure could help stabilize the division as a new chair is selected by Dean James Muyskens.

Health Benefits Administration considers 15 to 25 percent premium increases, benefit reductions, elimination of HMO, and a 240-day waiting period for new hires. Sam Walton founder of Wal Mart, nation's largest retailer, dies at age 74 after a battle with cancer. Walton built a retail empire and became one of America's richest men.
Five finalists were named from 30 applicants for the Lawrence school district superintendent position. Board interviews with candidate Tony Stansberry of Grandview Mo at 6 30 p.m. today at the Eldridge Hotel. Other finalists include Al Azinger Thomas Cummings Joyce Dana and Donald Wilson.
