Kansas revenue estimates down but officials upbeat

Kansas lawmakers and Gov. Bill Graves said fresh revenue forecasts show lower total collections for the current year and fiscal 2001, prompting about $20 million in spending trims. The Consensus Estimating Group cut current-year forecasts by 55 million and 2001 by 2.6 million, yet leaders called the outlook manageable as they press to balance the fiscal plan.

Negotiators clear path for vote on state budget

Three senators and three House members reached a compromise on the FY 2001 state budget after six hours of discussion over arts and wildlife funding. The final plan, totaling over 8.6 billion dollars, increases public school funding only if extra federal nursing home funds materialize. House and Senate budgets now align on arts funding and park program cuts, with continued aid to cities for outdoor recreation and a pledge to tie education spending to federal support.
