A 17 year old, Derrick Del Reed of Lawrence, faces one count of first degree murder in the March 18 shooting death of 14 year old Kamarjay Dement Shaw. The arrest affidavit has been sealed as he plans to argue self defense in Douglas County District Court.
Lawrence leaders consider reversing a plan to include draft changes on how police complaints are handled. At today’s meeting the Lawrence City Commission will weigh adopting a resolution to remove the Community Police Oversight Work Group’s review directive for a draft ordinance on police complaints.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks says no removal plans for an unsanctioned homeless camp behind the Amtrak station in East Lawrence near Seventh and New Jersey streets. Officials note the nearest bald eagle nest is about a mile downstream, so impact on habitat is considered relatively low for now. KDWP enforces a conservation easement from the late 1980s on the Riverfront Mall property, and is researching whether the camp violates protections, with no city removal directive issued yet.
Eight months into ARPA allocations, Douglas County reports progress on most funded projects with several nearing completion. The update tracks 2022 fourth quarter progress, detailing $23.75 million in federal aid split between nonprofits and county departments. External grants include 425000 to Lawrence Habitat for Humanity and 118000 to the Senior Resource Center.
