Big MLB extensions reshape luxury tax era with Sheffield deal
Gary Sheffield agreed to a landmark 61 million six year contract with the Florida Marlins, while Cal Ripken signed a 15.1 million two year deal with the Baltimore Orioles. Texas edged into deals with John Burkett and Rusty Greer, each potentially expanding to over 11 million. Ripken noted the rarity of staying with one team as he opened the Orioles season with a 4-2 win.
