Fatal ice crash kills child and injures mother near Lakin
In Garden City Kansas on April 3 a car driven by Captain Neil C. Smith from the Topeka Army Air Field lost control on icy U S Highway 50 four miles east of Lakin crashing into a bridge. CPI Timothy Ryan age 2 was killed and his mother Mrs Julia Ryan was seriously injured. Mrs Ryan and her two children were bound for Riverside California to join her husband Lt Col Clair E Ryan former Topeka field commander. Smith suffered a skull laceration and shock. The nine month old son Mark was unharmed and Mrs Ryan was taken to a Lakin hospital.
