After Duke beat Kansas 72 65 ending KU’s miracle run fans filled campus between Wescoe and Strong halls in jubilation and later fights. A Duke mascot was burned in effigy, police intervened to douse a fire, bottles were tossed, yet no injuries were reported.
Dozens of Kansas University students and Lawrence residents were treated after post game celebrations following KU's 72-65 defeat by Duke. About 20,000 gathered outside Wescoe Hall as fights erupted, with 6 to 12 removed for fighting. One 20 year old KU student treated for ankle injury. no arrests reported. A separate incident at Benchwarmers Bar left three injured after a knife attack by a 22 year old Topeka man.
Indianaapolis report on Kansas University's NCAA Tournament run ending with a 72 65 defeat by Duke in the national final. Fans praised KU for beating Indiana Arkansas and North Carolina to reach the title game, while Duke clinched the championship.
Michael T. Bittle, 24, Shawnee, was found guilty by a six member jury in Douglas County District Court of conspiring to commit criminal damage to property for planning to spray paint KKK on Kansas University Spencer Art Museum in October. He received 30 days in jail, labeled a hate crime by District Judge Mike Malone.
