Railroads Move to End 65000 Jobs With New Work Rules
The nation's railroads announce that at 12:01 a.m. on April 8 they will implement work rule changes aimed at ending featherbedding, eliminating about 65,000 jobs. The move follows a Supreme Court ruling allowing changes after injunctions, with unions signaling no unilateral action while urging negotiated settlement. The plan includes 40,000 diesel firemen cuts, crew size changes, demarcation removals between unions, and mileage pay reform to 160 miles per day. The five unions back government cooperation to avoid service disruption and seek an emergency board to negotiate a peaceful settlement.
