General Vandenberg Dies of Cancer at Walter Reed
Washington AP Gen Hoyt S Vandenberg Air Force chief of staff from 1948 until retirement last June died Friday at Walter Reed Hospital aged 55. He had been hospitalized since October for observation and checkup and was reported to have cancer of the prostate that spread to bones and spine. He succeeded Gen Carl Spaatz as chief of staff and led efforts to rebuild and focus the U S Air Force on long range, high speed planes capable of striking deep into enemy territory.

VanderWerf Named Chairman-Elect of ACS Education Division
Calvin A VanderWerf of the University of Kansas will become chairman-elect of the American Chemical Society education division next January. At 36 he is among the division’s youngest chairmen and has served as secretary of the division. The ACS education division has about 1300 members, teachers of chemistry. VanderWerf joined KU as an instructor 13 years ago, became full professor five years ago, and has earned a reputation as a leading organic chemist with multiple research grants.
