British bombers hit German war plants near Paris and Poissy while U-boats and surface ships press Atlantic clashes. Nazi claims of Allied damages contrast with Allied anti submarine efforts as Soviet and German forces clash around Leningrad and surrounding suburbs.
New Delhi April 2 Cripps and the All India Congress indicate a willingness to negotiate a compromise on Indian independence. The Congress executive prepared a detailed rejection of Britain's post-war dominion offer while drafting counter-proposals for Cripps. Cripps postponed his return home, keeping doors open for dialogue on counter ideas.
Anonymous postcards circulating in Kansas urged counties to call a special election to replace legislators serving in the army. The secretary of state said only the governor can order such an election and clerks were told to disregard the notices. The issue was raised in the last session but efforts to unseat lawmakers in the military failed.
Washington reports sharp artillery and dive bomber action around Bataan with no general battle. Intermittent air raids persist on Manila Bay defenses as Fort Mills on Corregidor duels Japanese shells with no damage. Tokyo claims Corregidor damage from naval air attacks between March 24 and 31.
Lawrence E. Woods, secretary of the Southwest Lumbermen's Association, told Kiwanis members that a new munitions plant near Parsons will benefit Lawrence more than Eudora or Kansas City. He noted rising home purchases by former renters, limited residential building, and possible government housing projects. Woods discussed WWI lumber controls, price ceilings, and the high share of lumber for defense, with 73 percent of last year’s production used for defense needs.
County road crews finished backfill at the Baldwin creek control gate above Lake View and are removing dirt from ditches. County Engineer E. E. Larson said rains last fall and early spring sent soil into ditches, raising levels above roads and forcing temporary dikes. Only three trucks spare for hauling, so many loads must be short hauls or wasted. About 30 of 180 miles of county roads are affected by the ditch problem.
CPI Kansas University through the state board of regents seeks 104 893 dollars from the estate of Charles Robinson Kansas' first governor. Secretary Hubert Brighton asked the state school fund commission to surrender the money claiming it was rent from Robinson property and should be part of the university fund rather than the permanent university fund.
The War Production Board froze stocks of metal office furniture and equipment and barred insulated metal filing cabinets safes and metal visible record equipment except for top priority orders. It ordered drastic curtailment of other lines and noted hundreds of jobs located through the classified ads.
About 200 Farm Bureau women will meet tomorrow at 1 30 p m in the Community building basement for a Play Day program. Activities include group songs led by Mrs David Perkins of the Vinland unit stories by Mrs Blaine Grimes of Lawrence and games led by Mrs Billie Schroyer of the Kanwaka unit. Miss Doris Compton, the state recreation specialist, was to direct the program but is ill.
President Roosevelt rejects a bill granting congressional consent to a Colorado Kansas Nebraska water compact citing concerns over U S navigation rights and federal authority. Governor Carr questions if the veto affects the compact’s validity amid state disagreement on federal reservations.
Kansas remains on spring weather schedule as cooler breezes are expected tonight. Abnormally high temperatures yesterday favored wheat growth and pastures. A 42 degree low was recorded at Dodge City and Goodland. Phillipsburg hit 79, with temperatures averaging 10 to 15 degrees above normal statewide.
Representative Disney reports an overwhelming majority in the House would vote for a sales tax rather than large increases in individual and corporate taxes proposed by the treasury. He says Congress could not raise 7 billion dollars from corporations and individuals and that a sales tax may be needed despite reluctance.
Orville Love who began as FSA supervisor for Douglas and Leavenworth counties on Monday was appointed for a one month term. He has been accepted for army air corps training and may be called at any time. After nine months training he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant. Love came here from Atchison.
State Highway Commissioner A C Hancock reported to Gov. Payne Ratner that no Japanese were spotted entering Kansas from Colorado after an initial inspection of major northwest Kansas routes.
Japanese sea borne troops reportedly landed at Akyab the chief west Burma port less than 100 miles from the India frontier. Chinese sources say the assault came under cover of cruisers and destroyers with a long range air and sea threat to British lines and India’s security. Meanwhile Australia reports Japan massing forces for a possible Port Moresby attack and Cripps in India signals renewed self rule negotiations into next week.
A second parade for departing draftees is set for Saturday with 30 men slated to leave for induction. The 33 man quota reflects transfers to other boards. The Haskell band will lead, followed by color guards from VFW and American Legion and the Kansas State Guard. Re cruits report to the Armory at 10 45. Luncheon follows at 11 15. The parade on Massachusetts street starts at 12 30 and the bus to Leavenworth departs at 1 00.
City and county officials seek new office space for all county rationing boards. A federally funded worker will work full time at the site. Five boards exist for Lawrence Baldwin Eudora Lecompton and rural areas with current meetings in various towns and the basement courthouse office hosting the county board.
Air ace Eddie Rickenbacker told Wichita on April 2 that 10 million troops and 300000 pilots are required to win the war and that the national debt could reach 500 billion dollars. He warned the public to sacrifice liberties or risk losing them after victory. He predicted the conflict could last five years and contrasted it with the last war being a holiday.
University of Kansas students will hold a 10 a.m. Good Friday convocation in Hoch Auditorium featuring Dr. Mark A. Dawber speaking on Facing the Cross and an a cappella choir directed by Dean D. M. Swarthout. Dawber will also address a Ministerial Alliance union meeting at Trinity Lutheran at 2 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. service at Haskell. The program includes the six part motet Crucificus by Lotti and ends after about 25 minutes. Doors close at 10:01. Townspeople may attend.
The Douglas county rationing board issued certificates for passenger tires, tubes, and other categories. Recipients include Margaret Broadwell, Earl Eugene Hope, Mary Estelle Nelson, Mrs. Barmark Hildebrand, Philip Earnest Schulmeyer, Harry George Kennedy, and others across Lawrence, Baldwin, Richland, and Wellsville with instances of new, retread, and obsolete tires plus tubes. A late March special meeting transferred Lawrence city quota to J. W. Small Co. and others, with several inspectors noted.
County officials learn Douglas will receive a June state sales tax apportionment of 93 337.36, up 23 491.01 from last year. Welfare funds get 27 655.11, other units 65 682.25. total estimated distribution near 6.5 million with schools and cities receiving sizable shares.
Wheeler R H, professor of psychology at the University of Kansas, was elected president of the Kansas Academy of Science at its annual meeting in Hays. KU professors Taft and Baumgartner will continue as editor and managing editor of Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science.
C V Kincaid of Montgomery County obtained six options on 23 full lots and parts of three more in Eu dora on March 14. The northeast Eu dora area lies south of the Santa Fe tracks between Sixth and Tenth streets and east of H street. Total price named is 6025 dollars, with all options secured for 10 dollars or less and set for 90 days. Property owners include Melvin E Wilson James Williams William H Knake Alfred Eisele and Annie Lee. two options came from Eisele with prices from 400 to 1950 dollars.
The Lions club hosted a quiz program conducted by Wendell Wyatt at Wiedemann's meeting. Charter night will be observed at the Country Club on April 22. The state Lions club convention is scheduled for Emporia on May 24 25 and 26.
