35 Go to the Army Marches Through Kansas City
Thirty five Douglas county selectees marched down Massachusetts street at 12 30 today on the first leg of their journey to the U S army. The parade included Col James Dusenbury and Neal Wherry who spoke at a luncheon. The group reported to selective service headquarters at 10 45. Kathleen Heck pinned flags, candy and cigarettes were handed out, and Richard Barber led the unit with Luther Gustafson assisting. They boarded buses at Sixth and Massachusetts for Fort Leavenworth but waited for transport until 1 50 when a regular bus arrived and they were sent to Victory Junction by taxi.

Owens Named New Undersheriff in Douglas County
Wayne Owens is named undersheriff of Douglas County by Sheriff Charles Banning. Owens has served as deputy since January 1939 and replaces Lathrop B Read Jr who leaves for Omaha to join the Military Police Corps. Francis Skinner is appointed deputy sheriff to replace Owens and will begin duties at once.
