Six Douglas county 4-H clubs Meadowlark Sunflower Big Springs Hi-Point Kawrusa and Lone Star train for the county model club contest set for April 13 at the Lawrence high school auditorium. Winners advance to the district contest with Meadowlark the prior year's trophy holder and Lawrence Rotary sponsoring the award. Judges include George Dunkley General W S Metcalf and Walter Schaal.
The Italian press attacks fashion abroad as unpatriotic. Giornale d Italia accuses moneyed Italians who buy imports of harming Italy's economy and morality and threatens to publish lists of offenders. Other papers pick up the campaign as patriotic fever rises.
The Nort wrence Baptist church hosts the Young People's club premiere titled NBC Broadcasts. Highlights include musical numbers by Bryant Drake and Joe Spotts, readings by Muriel Johnson Ethelyn Hardiman and Lucile Taylor-Smith, piano solos by Alberta Fiverett and Robert Scott, a cooking segment by Mmie Cooper, a children’s story by Sinestine Waters, and talks by Rev. W A Scott and Victor Gossett club president.
Olympic decathlon champion Jim Bausch will perform at Dickinson theater with matinee and evening shows Sunday through Tuesday. He will sing and speak on athletics before touring Dickinson venues and will skip the Kansas Relays decathlon due to theater commitments.
A large gathering of parents friends and alumni attended induction services for new National Honor Society members in the Lawrence Chapter held in the school auditorium last night. Principal emeritus A F H Olney directed the ceremony with chapel members assisting. A social hour followed in the south hall of the school.
The Junior High reports a 95 percent attendance for March under Principal M F Hyde. Total enrollment stood at 594 with 564 in attendance and 100 tardiness cases. Tiness cited as a major absence cause. Police motorcycles are serviced and ready for duty with spring weather.
President Roosevelt issues an executive order adjusting veteran benefits and pensions. It limits burial costs, caps pensions for federal workers with combat disabilities, and reduces payments for those overseas. The order allows challenges to presumptions of entitlement and may be revised within two years. An unrelated $50 million saving on adjusted service certificates is not covered.
In Lawrence, many longtime residents defend Hovey Hanna against circulating rumors. Hanna is praised for civic and church work, Rotary leadership, youth programs, and steady business, and supporters believe he would be a valuable addition if elected to the board of education.
Orry Walz a University student reports the death of his uncle Frank Beckett in Portland Oregon. Beckett formerly lived in Douglas county and moved west about twenty five years ago. He was well known in the White district and was the sole son of Rev B B Beckett a former Methodist minister in the area.
The Rev. Dr. O D Baltzly will discuss how far a Christian should dance during a Sunday 7 45 pm lecture at Trinity Lutheran church Omaha. Pastor Puls praises Baltzly while noting the talk will cite cases linking dancing to morality issues and breach of girl conduct. The program emphasizes stealing and gossip under the theme The Commandments of Just Relationships and includes a 15 minute Musicale by Miss Mildred Reuter for early arrivals.
Kirk Fitzpatrick of Topeka was packing to move when a shotgun discharged striking him in the breast. He was taken to St Francis hospital and expected to recover in a few days. He is brother to Frank Fitzpatrick of Lawrence. In another item, Japanese forces claim occupation of Shihmenchai after seven hours of heavy fighting near Shanhaikwan, China.
A banquet for Xi chapter of Sigma Kappa marks its twenty first birthday at the chapter house Saturday at 7 p.m. Alumnae guests, lavender and maroon decorations, and the Sigma crest on place cards and programs accompany speeches and toasts tied to The House of Sigma. The National Scholarship cup will be awarded to the top scholastic chapter by Ruth Litchen.

Landon assumes control of the State Highway Commission naming three new commissioners E A Pinkerton of Glasco Earl C Todd of Independence and B W Bray of Syracuse and appointing Harry Darby of Kansas City as director He gains a deciding vote in six member body on tied questions and can reorganize department to pursue efficiency and economy Darby aims to limit year end activities to road maintenance and projects tied to federal aid while state funds remain over one and a half million dollars in the red.
April begins with Kansas enjoying mild spring weather and no rain as meteorologist Flora forecasts cooler conditions tomorrow with highs around 60 to 65. Nightly lows are expected from 35 in the north to 45 in the south.
Mrs. R Skinner of Eu dora Route 1 renewed her Journal-World subscription marking forty years as a continuous reader. The note underscores long loyalty to the local newspaper.
The Match King portrays Paul Kroll a cleaner turned match magnate whose rise to monopolies across Europe ends with a Paris suicide. Warren Williams leads with Lily Damita and Glenda Farrell co stars amid extras and a final showing of The Match King at the Patee bill along with a comedy and Devil Horse episode.
D A Morgan of Shawnee Mission visited Lawrence to discuss the Kansas State Teachers association convention set for November 3 and 4. He met with C E Birch O J Lane and Chancellor E B Lindsey to review contracts and speaker arrangements to be forwarded from Topeka state headquarters.
Rev. Seth W. Slaughter will preach The Church as the final in a pre Easter sermon series guiding church members and youth. Music arranged by Miss Enlow features Miss Blanche Sams and the vested choir. Palm Sunday service includes Stainers Crucifix and Gauls Open the Gates of the Temple. Public invited. Sunday Forum in Leavenworth at Ninth Street Baptist with Charles Stokes presiding. Kaw Valley Poultry Association holds monthly meeting in Chamber of Commerce rooms with new members to be initiated.
A marriage license was issued to Harald E. Henley and Lucille Gentry of Kansas City Missouri. They expected to be married by a Topeka minister.
Members held an all day meeting and dish luncheon at Mrs. B E Bussine home. They quilted for Mrs. Robert Laughlin who lost her home in a recent fire. Several events and visits are noted including illness easing in Midland school and various local social calls and travels.
An Ohio physician reports a formula by Dr Parker that relieves indigestion sour stomach gas and other stomach ailments. The orange colored thirty day treatment is sold in Lawrence at Crown Drug Store with 98¢ for one bottle and 2.50 for three, 5.00 for six, money back if not satisfied.
Mr and Mrs O R Bales and children of No 6 spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Charles Spray and other friends including Mrs Red Lewis and Mr Robert Sphar. Gilbreaths visited DeSoto calling on Mrs Ed Freeman and the Ransomes in Lawrence. Betty Lucille Newcomb, child of Chas Newcomb, was born February 8 1902 and died March 6 1933. Our community extends sympathy to the family. Mrs Earl Hurlburt is ill. Wm Smith family moved to East Lawrence. Marion Strong visited Ed Deay at Pleasant Grove.
W. E. Spalding filed petitions with City Clerk A. E. Woestemeyer to run in the mayoral primary. The petitions, sworn at City Hall, total 2821 names and reflect the local movement for a return to the council form of government.
