Hastins family left for home. Munn of Chicago slightly hurt.
In St. Louis on March 31 eighty seven recruits for the Fourth and Sixth cavalry, stationed in New Mexico and Arizona, have moved from Jefferson Barracks since March 22. An additional sixty recruits for the First cavalry in California are to be sent soon.
Special dispatch reports Henry Lewis, a cultured man about 30, arrested in Chicago for breaking into George Innes & Co. in Lawrence Kansas. Forty-one of forty-four silk bolts recovered from a trunk. About 2000 yards valued at $3000. Requisition to take him to Kansas for trial.
In Pittsburg on March 31 a flotilla of 37 barges owned by Jas Walker & Co carrying 450000 bushels of coal broke from moorings at Smithfield Street Bridge. Towboats Abe Hays Dick Fulton and St Lawrence suffered sinks, guards lost, and a total loss around 50000 dollars as the runaway fleet drifted down the Ohio River with several barges sunk and others saved or damaged.
Chicago March 1. In People vs Pierce the Supreme Court affirmed the law requiring insurers to deposit securities with the State Auditor and to file annual reports. The decision holds that an insurer is personally liable for acting as agent for an unauthorized company. Many similar actions against leading underwriters are pending.
Tow boat Polar Star exploded its boilers opposite Belmount Missouri at 2 PM while towing three lumber barges to St Louis. The upper works were blown apart. the barge crews remained unharmed. Captain Adams was thrown about 300 yards, rescued by a skiff. Two firemen, two coal passers, and a lookout are missing. The rear crew had minor injuries. Cause unknown. Engine says boilers tested hours earlier. Vessel owned by Capt Peterson of St Louis.
Buffalo March 31 The jury found Thomas Waitern known as Brother Frank guilty in the second count of an attempted assault on a girl six and a half years old after twenty hours. Judgeight sentenced him to five years in Auburn prison, noting mercy shown by jurors and reports of similar attempts. Brother Frank has held positions at other places including New York.
