In a city museum yesterday an enormous anaconda on display injured watchman Sam Masher and killed a valuable trick pony. The reptile escaped its cage briefly, wrapping Masher and then the pony before the animal was restrained. Masher suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized.
In Aspen Colorado a fierce underground fire rages in the Smuggler mine eighth level, possibly caused by spontaneous combustion or a careless miner with a candle. Efforts to reach the blaze fail as fifty men face danger from toxic fumes and collapsing supports. over forty are overcome, while bulkheads near the Mollie Gibson connection are installed to cut off the fire. Nearby reports mention Bank of English closures and a railroad explosion in Havana with casualties.
Senator Thomas Platt denounces the Citizens' Union and Seth Low, accusing anti-Tammany forces of splitting the Republican vote. He defends the party's actions in municipal affairs, recalls offers of union conferences, and asserts Republicans remain powerful and united despite factional heat.
