The Lawrence Gazette announces a new prize scheme for its neighborhood news correspondents. The top contributor will receive a Handsome Road Wagon with subsequent prizes including a Gold Watch a large scarce Bible and a 550 photo collection Glimpses of America and more. Votes are cast via ballots in each issue and by prepaid subscriptions. Balloting closes July 31 at noon with weekly tallies published.
General Woodford named new minister to Spain after dinner with President McKinley. He will present a demand for reparation for Dr Ruiz's death and prepare Spain for Cuba’s loss of status, with a final proposal on Cuba's disposition. McKinley stresses US aims to avoid hostility, aid Cuba's freedom, and warns of possible intervention and annexation if Spain does not move.

Three men tried to rob a Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern passenger train near Selma Illinois sixty five miles east of here last night but failed. One robber Alisa Tweed a paroled convict was shot and dying in Salem jail. Ex convict Thomas Schumaker was later arrested. The express car reportedly carried more than 100000 in cash. The robbers prepared a trestle pile to derail the train but fled when a posse arrived.
In Topeka, Kansas on June 19 police arrested John O'Brien of the Merd Sleim Brewing Company and L Hoffman of the Lemp Brewing Company on charges of selling intoxicating liquors. Eight joints were raided and the proprietors arrested.
