The President sent to the Senate the nominations of Nathaniel Barnes for Kansas City Kansas and Frank M. Atkinson for St. Joseph Missouri as postmasters. Four additional Kansas men were named for postmaster posts: Charles E Bowman Richard Oakford Harry H W Lusk Alfred York. A confirmation fight is planned against Atkinson though unlikely to derail. Atkinson is backed by John C Bittinger and National Committeeman Kerens, opposing ex-Congressman Crowther and Chauncey L Filley supporter John Albus.
The President sent nominations to the Senate including Lawrence Townsend of Pennsylvania as envoy to Portugal for the United States, Eilis Roberts of New York as treasurer, Conrad N. Jordan as assistant treasurer in New York, William E K Andrews as treasury auditor, and William W. Brown as war department auditor.
A frenzied assailant attacked at the home of Mrs. Mary Robinson on Brooklyn Avenue. Victims include Mrs. Fateh a colored woman dead. Mia Williamson a colored woman aged 25 severely wounded. Mrs. Ma Robinson aged 50 shot in the right ankle with multiple bones broken. Police seek the killer.
From Tacoma, January 5 reports via Hong Kong that the widow of Dr. Rizal commands a company of Philippine rebels near Naic Cavite province armed with rifles. She heads headquarters after marrying Rizal against her parents' wishes and dedicates herself to his cause following his capture.
In Ottawa June 5 the Senate debated Sir Oliver Mowat's bill to ban kinetoscope prize fight pictures entering Canada. A motion to kill it failed 20 to 16, amendments limited press and foreign papers, and talks about fights. Penalty trimmed to 1000 dollars. bill sent to Commons likely to pass.
The United States screw gunboat Princeton was launched in Campen New Jersey with Miss Margaret W Updyke christening the ship. The vessel measures 204 feet, 36 feet beam, 1000 tons displacement and carries six 4 inch guns four 6 pounders and two 1 pounders.
