Weather of 1886 in Kansas Mostly Dry and Warm

Prof F H Snow analyzes 1886 Lawrence weather noting an extremely dry second half, a very warm summer, and record low rainfall. The year averaged 52.04 degrees with a high 105 and low 18 below zero, 23.25 inches of precipitation, 28 thunder showers, and unusual frost-free periods. Snow totaled 23.50 inches, with a predominance of clear days in October and a windy year overall. A December marriage at P S Coursen’s home unites W H Kincaid and Emma Colline.

Masquerade by Knights of Labor draws one hundred couples

The Knights of Labor masquerade at the Armory last Wednesday drew about one hundred couples. Committees led by D. D. Abernathy, B. F. Remington, and S. Brown organized the event with fine costumes including an Indian princess, a cowboy, a gypsy queen, and many others. The night passed with strong enjoyment and orderly festivities.

Anti Slang Society Formed At Valley Grove

An Anti Slang society formed at Valley Grove Jefferton county on January 1 at W R Fullerton's house. Officers elected include Miss A Fullerton president Miss EK Gilbert vice president W J Moore secretary W Gerald Gilbert treasurer. Members listed span several surnames with varied roles and a 1 cent penalty per 25 slang words. Meetings set for first Saturday monthly at members' homes. Also notes Degree of Honor U W W held public installation with several officers installed and a long entertainment program followed by a late lunch and dancing. Wakarusa Library Society officers listed and a correction issued praising Miss Lenora Ricker for stopping a runaway team.
