Robinson to Vincent and the War of Governors

January Weather Record At University Of Kansas

The 1894 January report by Chancellor Snow notes seven Januaries in 27 years with higher mean temps, a first third mean of 28.6 degrees, middle third 41.7, and a 16th the warmest day on record. Eleven readings show the thermometer swinging over 82 degrees in eight days, with rainfall below average and unusually clear skies.

D S Ruse a Midland farmer was riding a Union Pacific fast passenger train toward Midland when he leaped from the car near the Kansas City layover to reach home. He fell hard, sustaining severe facial cuts and a dislocated left elbow, dragged to a nearby house, then to Dr. Dicks in Lawrence for treatment. He faces weeks of recovery and months before full arm use returns after the 40 mph mishap.

The city plans to provide Spratt biscuits to the poor as a substantial ration. Spratt biscuits, used by kennels nationwide, are made from oatmeal graham corn beetroot vegetables and meat fibrine pressed into hard biscuits. When soaked they become nourishing and easily distributed, offering a compact nutritious meal.

Busy Ice Season With Lawrence Men Employed

The past week saw heavy ice industry activity with over 300 Lawrence men employed and about 31,000 dollars paid out to workers Saturday night by Manager J L Bolles. Employment mainly served railroads Santa Fe and Union Pacific, with ice shipped to distant points. Covey and Green operated ice houses on the river, while local officials and workers prepared for continued work if another hard freeze occurs.

Rev Cowan Accepts Post at State University

Rev Hctor W Cowan sent a telegram last week appointing Chanedier Juan as cine creos and director of physical culture at Kateus State University. He will assume duties March 11, conduct chapel exercises and oversee athletics, aiming to elevate religious and physical programs in the institution.
