New Saw Mill Planned in Jones County

Reynolds and Ellis, veteran saw mill men from Hattiesburg, announce a new mill project in Jones county. Timber lands in Jones Smith and Jasper counties will supply 12 to 13 million feet. The mill, with a 20 000 to 30 000 daily capacity, will be built at Gitano along the Gulf and Ship Island railroad, about fourteen miles from Laurel, and operations could start within thirty days.

South Miss Press Meeting Highlights Regional Coverage

Small Offenses Run Up Court Docket On Monday

Police Justice Gavin opened police court to a long docket with many continuances. Will Wimbley paid $2.80 plus costs for jumping off a train. George Mott was sent to the city lockup after pleading guilty to a bicycle ordinance violation and fined $1 plus costs. Reuben Shields pleaded guilty to a back fare ordinance violation and was fined $1 plus costs.

Odd Fellows announce Sunday afternoon degree practice at 3 30 in the Odd Fellows Hall for initiatory and third degree. Y M C A Notes Highlight Strong Crowd and Commitments

A large Y M C A meeting last Monday night drew many young men with fervent testimony. Speakers discussed "Saying and Not Doing" from Matthew 23, urging commitment to the Lord and unity with a local church. Several Laurel business leaders announced decisive steps toward faith and abstinence from sin.

Stewart Guilty of Manslaughter in Moselle Shooting

The State v. W. M. Stewart trial ended with a verdict of guilty of manslaughter. Stewart received a three year penitentiary sentence for the shooting of Cleveland McNeill near Stewart's Moselle residence. He testified McNeill threatened him and he acted in fear after McNeill drew a knife, with McNeill's wife, Stewart's step-daughter, involved in the defense attempt.

City water officials plan to increase pumping capacity from two million gallons daily as demand in Laurel rises. A larger pump and 11,000 feet of new water pipes are in the works to prevent shortages, with authorities moving quickly to implement the upgrades.
