The Grand Rally and District Meeting of Independent Order of Odd Fellows met at the Laurel Odd Fellows Hall September 20 and 21. The event featured committee work, initiatory degrees, an open district session, a public meeting with a musical program and addresses, and degree work by Meridian Lodge. Distinguished visitors Grand Master King and Grand Secretary Doty attended, with President F. H. Bush reporting from Forrest County after a Tallahala Baptist Association meeting.

The Dental School grounds hosted opening day as over 700 children gathered for assignment to buildings under Superintendent Watkins and Principal C Lamar Neill. Silas W Gardiner school welcomed 400 primaries, central and high grammar rooms filled, total enrollment 1747 with 1120 in white schools and 627 in negro schools.

Rain Aids Cotton Yet Brings Damage In Union
A recent rain fell Monday and Monday night in Union causing damage to standing cotton and cane. Brackin Kirkland, a diligent Union youth, picked 545 pounds of cotton last Thursday. A school meeting occurred Saturday at the school house and classes will start the first Monday in October under Prof. Roberts.

Justice Singley Fined For Illegal Catfish Trap Catch
After a hearing, Justice Singley was fined five dollars and costs. A Tuesday display of a large catfish catch drew authorities who arrested the possessor. The charge was illegal trapping in Tallahoma and Tallahala. Game Warden Wellborn made the arrest. Bond was posted and the case moved to Justice of the Peace McGowin in Ellisville, as the violation occurred in the First district.

Fell From Train to His Death
Guy Bethea a former Laurel citizen was fatally struck when he fell beneath train wheels at a rail crossing authorities said. The accident left Bethea dead at the scene as investigators reviewed the incident.
Horrific death on Laurel branch train near Soso
Saturday night a man named Guy Bethea, a former Laurel resident, died after being struck by a moving coach on the Lastman Gardiner Co. train bound for Laurel. His wife and three week old infant were aboard when the tragedy occurred. The body, found half a mile west of Sosa, was taken to Laurel for burial at Hickory Grove cemetery the next day.
