The city government purchases uniforms for the fire department youth, replacing self supplied clothing. The new gear improves equipment and parity with other cities. Military boys gain dress parade company status and girls will draw straws to decide preferences.
Our correspondents report the Dry Swamp saw mill nearing full operation and cutting lumber briskly in hot September days. A cautious note comes from a serious accident as eight year old Tommie Smith fell from a roller bed at the mill and cut his chin, with jawbone worries. Local visits include Mrs. Powell with Mrs. Smith, John Blackledge calling on W. D. Smith, and Maggie Walters as guest of Bettie and Marguerite Hudson. The Barber family welcomed a baby girl weighing eleven pounds.
Residents report homecomings after weeks away as Monnie Bostick returns. Mrs. Dr. Smith visits with sister Mrs. Mat Morgan. Alonzo Hammett makes a business trip to Luisville. Liddie Davie returns from a lengthy visit in Waynesboro. A group from the community attends circuit court in Ellisville this week. Charlie Parker returns home after a year at Hill's Business College in Texas. E. C. Loper and Wy- learn local developments.
Laurel will gain new telephone connections with a line south to Richton and north to Bay Springs along the M. J. & K. C. railroad, linking to Bay Springs Newton and Lake Como. The project, publicized by Supt. L W Powell and manager Leland Hume of Cumberland Telephone Co, will benefit Laurel merchants and others along the route.
Residents traveled to Laurel on Saturday night include Mr J B Smith Mrs Muhle Mr and Mrs D R Sanders and Misses Annie and Lucy C Smith. Mrs Ella Clay of Wiggins was guest of Miss Annie Smith Wednesday.
Rev Basset of Loain preached at Sharon Sunday to a large crowd. Mr and Mrs John Martin of East Laurel visited friends and relatives in the community Saturday and Sunday. Mr Joe Rigmore and Misa Barnett of Laurel attended preaching at Sharon Sunday. Mr Eva Jones of Laurel visited his girl Sunday. A nice little crowd attended the musical entertainment at J N Jacobs Sunday afternoon. Mr Jeff Collins filled his appointment at Mr H Sim's Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Harmon Graves passed through our community Monday Mr D W Wade who has been real sick for some time is not any better Mr Wily and Sam Mitchell visited relatives at this place Saturday and Sunday Miss Eda Alpharetta and Mr Leroy Watson of Pleasant Ridge visited Miss Onia Hilbun Sunday Mt and Mayfield of ndar Col line visited relatives in this community Saturday
Monday morning at 10 o'clock Circuit Court opened with Sheriff Crawford summoning the first twenty four grand jurors. Judge Bullard quoted Robert E Lee and stressed duty on enforcing laws against whisky, gambling, and county office negligence. He urged indictments of officials for neglect, warned against blind tigers, and called attention to road maintenance and the ban on tobacco sales to minors. Proceedings show jurors actively duty bound. next week to report further trials and outcomes.
Rev Bassett of Louin preached to a large crowd at Sharon Sunday evening. Jim Lowe of Laurel visited our town Sunday. S E Reeves bought FE L Giegers stock and will run the business at the same stand. Jef Reeves has two sick children this week. W J Smith and J B Anderson took a quick trip to Laurel Monday.
Myrick W. N. Jenkins attended the Mt Vernon picnic last week. D. R. Jenkins, teaching at Antioch, is at home resting before his next school term. B. E. Jenkins is on the sick list. Myrick’s team beat Fairfield 7 to 6 last Friday.
Laurel merchants fear high eastern freight costs and applaud a new agreement between Mallory Steam Ship Line and M J K C railroad to base Laurel rates on Meridian. Rates from New York to Laurel drop toward Meridian levels across first, second, and A classes plus carload quantities of canned goods and bagging. Senior officials, including L L Lawrence, W L O Dwyer, and Boulton, push for adjustments to keep Laurel competitive as a growing commercial center.
