John Ruffin a black resident near Stringer shot his wife through the nose around noon Tuesday, then claimed suicide to Berry Sims. Sims and son pursued, Ruffin fought with a razor and escaped. A coroner's jury ruled the woman murdered by her husband.
Miss Lizzie Windham and her brother Henry visited Laurel this week. Joe Gatlin, after five years with the Wallace Drug Company, has resigned and joined Heidelberg Bros. He invites friends to visit. Hicks and Moorehead and John T. O Ferrall Sr. have returned from northern markets to buy fall stock for their firms.
Listings include a High Grade Columbia chainless bicycle fitted by D. E. Ross and sale of 3 four yoke teams with Lindsey wagon. Also up for sale are round trip tickets to Buffalo New York Denver Colorado Springs Pueblo and Louisville with various dates and limits from Abney & Travis Heidelberg J Hassell N C & NE agents.
Sunday afternoon at Laurel marked the fall opening of the YMCA A hall enlarged to seat about 600. Over 300 men and boys attended the service featuring songs, prayers, and a sermon by Reverend J W Chambers. Secretary Norvell led a message highlighting spiritual dangers and local issues at Hotels No 1 2 3.
On a Sunday afternoon near Stringer two young women were accosted by two insolent African American men who threatened death if they screamed. The girls fled and a white man named Will Ainsworth helped halt the pursuit. A crowd pursued the suspects, who were briefly jailed at Stringer before being released by an unknown intruder. The men claimed the names Napoleon McDonald and John Nunney known as Bear. residents warned to watch for them.
A Laurel meeting led by Rev. L. J. Gates and Rev. J. W. Atwood condemned gambling dens, pool rooms, and vice. Speakers urged law and order, urged civic duty, and prayed for awakening and obedience to the authorities to root out vice. The program ended with prayers and a strong call to action.
Laurel public schools begin the seventh session with 22 teachers under Supt Abbott. Enrollment for the week totals 1100 with 800 white and 300 colored pupils, up 20 white students from last year. Officials say better teachers and a more systematic curriculum promise strong work.
In Collins Mississippi on September 7 the county election on moving the courthouse from Williamsburg ended with 1381 for Removal, 181 against, and 147 total in East Love. Collins led with 787 votes, Seminary 591, Ora 3.
London broker Mr Buchan of Knoop Frerisch Cotton Brokers Co arrives at Laurel via Commercial Bank and Trust Co to buy cotton for the season. Dr L H Saunders spearheaded the move, promising Laurel and nearby merchants a chance to sell cotton and save money through broader broker support.
No Sunday afternoon Y M C A meetings through Sunday the 23rd due to a tent meeting by Bro. Smiley on the 9th and 16th. Men urged to attend tabernacle services for their benefit. Mr and Mrs Ben Norvell called to Augusta Georgia. father-in-law believed to be dying and may have died. Laurel friends extend sympathy and prayers.
The attending physicians report Mayor-elect Hunt is improving and doing as well as expected with a good pulse and nearly normal temperature. This positive update should comfort his many supporters and friends.
The Laurel market lists prices for farm staples and building materials including cotton at 9 3 4 per bushel, corn 70 to 75 per bushel, eggs 20 to 25 per dozen, butter 35 per pound, peas white 3.00, chickens hens 35, wool burr-free, cotton seed 13.50 per ton, shingles 3.25 to 3.50 per 1000, wax 23, yam potatoes 75, barbed wire 2.50 to 3 per roll, smooth wire 3.60 to 3.25.
The Ladies Aid Society of West End Methodist Church will host an ice cream social next Saturday night September 8 on the lawn in front of Youngblood's store. Proceeds fund new church seats. they earnestly solicit patronage.
